Artist Statement

Douglas Carr’s journey as a photographer began at age 16 when he got his first camera, sparking a lifelong passion for capturing the world through his lens. After years of exploring photography in various forms, he now specializes in creating evocative, abstract compositions that transform urban landscapes into dreamlike visual narratives. Based in Oslo, Douglas draws inspiration from the city’s dynamic energy and aspires to capture iconic locations worldwide. His work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and uncover new perspectives within the abstract.

Biography

His passion for photography began in 1987 when he received his first SLR-camera. In high school, he became the unofficial school photographer, capturing sports and events, developing prints, and selling them to his classmates. By the end of the year, he was photographing the prom, marking the start of his photographic journey.

During his time in the army, he received special permission to carry his camera and continued honing his craft. Later, he enrolled at Cape Peninsula Technikon to study photography, and although he didn’t complete the program, my work was featured in an Ilford exhibition, a proud milestone.

In 1995, he began traveling with his camera as a constant companion. After living in London for seven years, he embraced the digital age of photography and, in 2003, moved to Norway. There, he opened two portrait and wedding studios, eventually winning Portrait of the Year in 2005.

In 2013, he shifted my focus to wildlife photography, inspired by a recommendation from my father. This led him to Botswana, where he began collaborating on a photo safari business. He later became a qualified safari ranger to better understand animal behaviour to improve his wildlife photography. His work was published in Wildlife Photographic in 2017, and he launched his own photo safari business shortly after.

Unfortunately, the pandemic in 2020 brought the tourism industry to a standstill, forcing him to close the business. Despite these setbacks, his love for photography endured. In 2021, he returned to Oslo, where he's now based, capturing the city's urban environment in his unique style. He focuses on creating abstract Digital Graphic Art Masterpieces which are available as Limited Edition art prints at Oslo Art Prints.
